En Méditerranée, les saupes (Sarpa salpa) sont l’un des rares poissons à former des bancs, parfois très denses. Herbivores, elles se déplacent en groupe et viennent toutes ensemble brouter les feuilles des prairies sous-marines, ici la posidonie (Posidonia oceanica). Ainsi, elles permettent de revigorer ces prairies et jouent un rôle important dans ces écosystèmes dont elles dépendent fortement.
